Fairy Tale Retelling Review: Entwined by Heather Dixon

Entwined
by Heather Dixon

Description:
Just when Azalea should feel that everything is before her—beautiful gowns, dashing suitors, balls filled with dancing—it's taken away. All of it. And Azalea is trapped. The Keeper understands. He's trapped, too, held for centuries within the walls of the palace. So he extends an invitation.

Every night, Azalea and her eleven sisters may step through the enchanted passage in their room to dance in his silver forest, but there is a cost. The Keeper likes to keep things. Azalea may not realize how tangled she is in his web until it is too late.

My Review:
I picked this gem up as an audiobook from the library.

Entwined is a heavily dance themed fantasy retelling of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses” by The Brothers Grimm, which I hadn't heard of until now.

It begins when Azalea’s mother passes away and her house is placed into a state of mourning: clocks stopped, windows covered, clothing blacked, and dancing banned. Her father occupies himself with a distant war, leaving Azalea to care for her twelve sisters.

As the story progressed, I became more and more delighted with the story. There’s just so much meat to it. The mythology of the High King and the magic of silver and oaths, the call of the dance, the battle between youth and duty, the coming of age, the redemption of a mourning and distant father, all of it is pulled into a most fantastic mystery. There’s even a delightful edge of romance, not limited to the main character. I also just adored the sugar teeth. A surprising character in a story of dancing, danger and romance.

At first I was put off by the dance descriptions, but they quickly become integral to the storyline. And as someone who doesn’t dance, I found it very impressive that the author could describe the moves in such a way that I could picture the graceful forms and interactions.

I was impressed, as well, by how the author and narrator gave the rather large cast of characters each their unique voices and personalities. This was a hefty feat as the story features Azalea, her twelve little sisters, several suitors, her father, the Keeper, and several historical figures.

Overall, I loved this story. I would highly recommend it to fans of fantasy, mystery, and clean romance.

As for the audiobook, the narration is skilled, assigning unique voices to all the characters. The accent of the narrator took me a little while to get used to, but ultimately suited the story and it’s setting exceedingly well.

Apocalyptic Review: The Mark (Left Behind #8) by Tim LaHaye, Jerry B. Jenkins

The Mark (Left Behind #8)
by Tim LaHaye, Jerry B. Jenkins

Description:
The exciting eighth book in the Left Behind series has sold over 2.5 million copies in hardcover and is now available in trade paperback. With over 40 million products sold, the Left Behind series is an international phenomenon.

My Review:
This one is exactly what it sounds like, all about how the mark of the beast comes about. I thought it plausible in the scope of the story, especially blending in chip technology. It was interesting that none of the people that already bore the mark of Christ were in the least tempted, even when faced with the enforcers (guillotines).

The deadline for complying ramps up the tension as well, as the various members of the Tribulation Force scramble to do as much as they can, save as many as they can, from behind enemy lines. David Hassid was again my favorite in this. Still, some of the missions seem a little botched to me.

One thing I did enjoy was the ramping up of Carpathia's sinister nature and the abandonment of giving any pretense of choice for the masses. It was creepy to the max.

Overall, I liked the story. If you enjoyed the previous installments, you'll likely dig this one.

I borrowed this from a friend.

Dystopian Review: Allegiant (Divergent #3) by Veronica Roth

Allegiant (Divergent #3)
by Veronica Roth
Narrators for the audiobook: Emma Galvin, Aaron Stanford

Description:
The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she's known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris's new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

My Review:
Ok, yeah, this one takes your heart and stomps on it, but still, it is fantastic!

I went into this with a great sense of trepidation, having heard all the outpourings of dismay from fellow readers. I managed to avoid reading spoilers, though, so this book came as a complete shock to me.

Now that I’ve read (listened to) it, I can’t imagine it any other way though. Everything makes sense, as much as it can, and while heartbreaking, I found the ending satisfying.

The dual narration threw me off at first, but like everything else in the story, it makes sense by the end. Wow! Both performances were spot on.

Overall, this book and the series are excellent reads, but they don’t take any prisoners. Be prepared to feel this story to your bones.

I borrowed this audiobook from the library, basically binged the trilogy.

Insurgent (Divergent #2)
by Veronica Roth
Narrator for the audiobook: Emma Galvin

Description:

But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves - and herself - while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable - and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian DIVERGENT series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

My Review:
The second book in the Divergent series is a rollercoaster of emotions.

Tris and Four are having troubles, Tris is traumatized, and their world is literally falling apart around them. Then add in betrayal and a horrific reality none of them could have imagined and you have one fantastic read.

Overall, loved this installment and highly recommend it to fans of the dystopian genre.

I borrowed this audiobook from the library right after reading the first one. The same narrator performs book two.
