Apocalyptic Review: Tribulation Force by Tim LaHaye, Jerry B. Jenkins

Tribulation Force  (Left Behind #2)
by Tim LaHaye, Jerry B. Jenkins

Description:
In one cataclysmic moment, millions around the globe disappear.

Those left behind face war, famine, plagues, and natural disasters so devastating that only one in four people will survive. Odds are even worse for enemies of the Antichrist and his new world order.

Rayford Steele, Buck Williams, Bruce Barnes, and Chloe Steele band together to form the Tribulation Force. Their task is clear, and their goal is nothing less than to stand and fight the enemies of God during the seven most chaotic years the planet will ever see.

My review:
Altogether, a pretty good read.

Set in the near future after the Rapture and subsequent kick off of the Great Tribulation, Tribulation Force continues to follow Rayford Steele, Buck Williams and their closest friends and family. Under the guidance of their new pastor, Bruce Barnes, the group attempts to decipher what's in store for the world.

In the first book, there were some faint glimmers of the supernatural that could have been mistaken for simple coincidence rather than fulfilment of prophecy, but in Tribulation Force, everything gets quite a bit more literal. It makes me wonder if the story will eventually reveal that Carpathia knew what he was the entire time and worked towards proving it.

There was a bit of repetition, especially of bible verses, information about the seals, and inner dialog concerning personal faith and trusting in God. Again, it came off a bit preachy, but it was paired with more action and intrigue. I got the feeling that the authors of this book would like to inspire the reader to salvation.

I liked the book and had a few late bedtimes finishing it. I think fans of apocalyptic fiction and stories inspired by biblical teachings would find this to their liking. There is an edge to the story that I feel some readers might find frightening.

I purchased my copy of this book.

Epic Fantasy Review: Mark of Destiny by Azrael James

Mark of Destiny
by Azrael James

Description:
In Belstrom, an ancient and mystical land where the Curo Wizards rule and life is cheap, Tizrah has known only a lowly existence at the armory with her father Eldim. Sweeping floors only to look forward to a life of domesticity, she finds herself longing for something more. Forbidden to take part in the Warrior Trials at the local arena, she sets off on a journey to prove herself worthy to be numbered amongst the men, but when she stumbles upon her destiny her life changes forever.

Korlin, a recent graduate of the High Wizard’s School of Curogath, sets forth on an assignment to save Belstrom from an ancient magic once thought eradicated. Risking his life while facing danger on all sides, he must realize who he is, and what he must become.

Mark of Destiny weaves together the threads of a captivating fantasy adventure, while remaining epic in scope, and modern in its originality.

My Review:
Mark of Destiny follows Tizrah and Korlin as they each set out to discover and meet their fates. Tizrah finds herself marked after an odd encounter on a road, while Korlin is set the task of tracking her down and capturing her, despite knowing nothing of her identity.

What I like most about this story is that both main characters are truly likeable, even when one seems to be pitted against the other. I love how their stories evolve and intertwine, making this a complex, but satisfying read. I also dig the humorous situations and banter, as well as the modern, but not too modern, language used by the characters. It feels epic, but the style and length make it great for folks who prefer books that aren’t big enough to knock someone out with.

I was a bit surprised Korlin turned out so nice based on some of the hints about the High Wizard’s School of Curogath. With so few making it through and one of the final few being slaughtered at the ceremony to induct them, I’d have thought he’d be a harder man. I also wanted to know more about how the Curo magic works. The rune magic is pretty well explored, but I never got a feel for the Curo side. Also, the elven remnants have magic, but that isn’t explained much either.

Overall, I really liked this story. I think fans of epic fantasy, magic, and quests will love it. Also, it’s a great choice if you like these sorts of reads but don’t want to dig through flowery language or overly long books.

I received the review copy of this book from the author.

About the Author:

Police Procedural Review: Mick Charger: Murder by Cop by J. Atencio

Mick Charger - Murder by Cop
by J. Atencio

Description:
Mick Charger, former Navy SEAL and homicide inspector had it all until a crushing back injury ended his career with the S.F.P.D.. Mick felt like "half a man" until he was offered and accepted a semi-retirement position as Sheriff of Alpine Ridge, a bucolic community on the shore of Lake Tahoe. Life was returning to normal for Mick until he learned he was working for the mob.

The head boss thought Mick would be easy to corrupt because he was disabled. They wanted a "dirty cop". When Mick refused the gangster's offer, they kidnapped his family.

Now it's a life or death race for Mick to rescue his family and shut down the mob before the mob shuts him down... permanently. They wanted a dirty cop. Mick is about to show them how dirty he can be. Mick Charger has declared war on the mob and South Lake Tahoe is Ground Zero...

My Review:
Mick Charger-Murder by Cop is a combination of police procedural, mystery/thriller, and even paranormal near the end. Mick’s a guy going through major changes after a bust goes wrong. Add in troubles with women, a new employer with a secret agenda, and a new department in need of some shaping up and he’s got his work cut out for him.

I thought the scenes with the bad guys were the best in the book. The meeting between Mick’s friend and the informant. The courier’s downfall. Both were really well done. I think if anything, these show the promise in this author’s writing. I also enjoyed the insight into police work and Mick’s no nonsense approach to shaping up his new sheriff’s office. Another thing I liked, despite it being a huge tangent off the main story, was the black widow mystery.

On the other hand, there were some significant issues with the book. First among these were the inconsistencies. Mick’s wife’s name changes back and forth for no reason. I could see it if Mick called her Laynie in dialog but the narration and other folks kept to Elaine, but it swaps constantly. There were also some minor hiccups, as with the badge being sent to Mick, then him not having a badge, then him going shopping with his wife to pick out a badge, which happens to be described exactly like the badge he was sent.

I thought the dialog was alright, but the punctuation around it and the tendency to announce the speaker’s conclusion right before they state it aloud to the other characters pulled it down. On a similar note, I noticed several places where something happens, then rewind, it happens again. The story is good, the characters interesting, but this book really needs a solid edit, and a lot of tightening of the plot.

So, overall, I’d say this is an ok read. I liked it, but I’d have trouble recommending it outright until it’s tightened up. That being said, if you don’t care whether a book’s rough, and you like police stories, you might like it.

I purchased this book while it was on a free promotion.
