Earth is dying, circling the drain on life support. The future of the human race depends on space exploration, but they’re running out of time. Parasitic insects are systematically killing the best scientific minds but no one knows why.

Mable Wilkinson is the last hope to figure it out, she just doesn’t know it yet. For years, her resourcefulness, intelligence, and penchant for problemsolving have put her at the top of a very short list of researchers, only she doesn’t want to be part of it.

Cast out at sixteen, Mable wrote off the problems of the world long ago. Now, her focus is on Hadley, her adopted little sister, and teaching her to survive in the cutthroat underground. Instead, both Mable and Hadley fall into the hands of the program’s recruiter, Silas Arrenstein, and he’s determined to have one of them. Mable can join up with the man and program who killed her brother, or she can leave Hadley to the same fate.

Tour Stop and Guest Post by Aaron Safronoff, Author of Sunborn Rising

Sunborn Rising banner

Today is my stop during the blog tour for Sunborn Rising: Beneath The Fall by Aaron Safronoff. This blog tour is organized by Lola's Blog Tours. The blog tour runs from 27 June till 10 July, you can view the tour schedule here.

And now, I'm excited to share with you this guest post by Aaron about books, particularly that most debated element of them, their covers.

Guest Post:
Big thank you to Lola for setting up this tour, and to I Read Too Much! for inviting me to post! Always a joy to talk books.
People judge books by the covers. They do. In fact, they often happily admit it in face-to-face conversations, and I applaud their candor. I agree. The cover and its contents might not match as the saying goes, but that’s the extent of accuracy of the old adage.
Visuals matter, both in function and form, and judgements begin there. It’s probably just human. I mean, we even taste with our eyes, as though all of our other senses are informed by what we see. If you’ve ever eaten Jelly Bellies you know that information isn’t always reliable, and that seems to bring us full circle to _not_ judging. But Jelly Belly doesn’t eschew the visual vocabulary; they expertly utilize it as their staple intrigue, a jelly bean that tastes nothing like the conventional candy. Beyond the initial twist they develop their own vocabulary because they know how important it is. As an author, I don’t want to ignore existing vocabularies, I want to understand them. I don’t want anyone to pick up my book thinking it’s chocolate pudding when it’s tabasco, unless I want people to make that face when they’re reading my book. ;-)
The front cover begins the story, the illustration as essential as the title.  In fact, the font, the paper, the chapter headings, and even the margins affect a reader’s experience in profound ways. I only possess an amateur understanding of those factors, but to illustrate the point, so to speak, Comic Sans elicits a different emotional response than say, Times New Roman, or Corsiva, and Wing Dings are right out. ;-) Entire professions revolve around understanding typeface because it’s so important to get it right in the world of publishing. As a storyteller, I embrace each element of the total package, and where my knowledge falls short, I do my best to ask questions, and frequently tap the shoulders of friends and colleagues for advice.
At the end of the day, the philosophical debate regarding the pros and cons of a quick to judge culture forks orthogonal from developing a modern franchise. It’s important to remind people to look deeper than the uncontrollable, superficial aspects of one another in life, but a book cover is neither fated, nor genetically determined; it’s something we create as artists and storytellers, and I care about it as much as the chosen words.

And now for more about Aaron's book! Looks like a great story for folks young and old.

A distant world of Great Trees floating on an ocean surrounding a star.

The civilization of creatures living among the boughs believe the darkness is normal. That is, until one willful young girl named Barra discovers the hidden journal of her late father.

Pouring over her father’s writing, Barra learns of a mysterious plague, a creeping vine choking the flow of light and water into the canopy. Her father warned the Elders. He urged them to take action. Those were his last words.

Together with her two best friends, a Rugosic named Tory and a Kolalabat named Plicks, Barra will explore every bark, wood, and leaf of the Great Forest to relight her world and complete her father’s story, even if it leads her beneath the Fall.

Fantasy Review: Root of the Rule (Lizard Queen #9) by H.L. Cherryholmes

Root of the Rule (Lizard Queen #9)
by H.L. Cherryholmes

Description:
The surrounding nations are gathering for a war against Pliada, the Trotéjo and the Arañalianza are assembling before the mountain upon which La Reina’s castle sits, and stakes have never been higher. The quest to learn how Amy Darlidale must bring about the New Morphósis has brought her full circle and the truth about her destiny as Lacáruna finally seems within reach. But much blood continues to be shed as all sides race toward the inevitable conclusion of the journey. Amy must summon forces from deep within if she is to save this world—or is it too late?

My Review:
Wow, what a series! Book nine of nine in the Lizard Queen saga ruined several nights of sleep, night after night, leaving me reading with one eye open because I couldn’t manage both, turning page after page unable to put it down. Everything comes together and the final push towards the New Morphósis is exciting and satisfying.

So what I liked most in this one was the build toward the final encounter. It was relentless and awesome. A lot more action and surprises, even at this point in the game, but behind all the action, there’s still plenty of lore and figuring things out. The ending makes sense, but it isn’t what I expected, not exactly anyhow, and that’s a good thing. It made the whole thing worth reading, and now I want to read it again.

Overall, I loved this book and the series as a whole. For those who were holding out for the series to be complete, I’d say go forth and grab all of the books now. The ending is satisfying, and it’s quite an exciting journey getting there.

I received the review copy of this book from the author.

YA Paranormal eAudiobook Review: City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments #5) by Cassandra Clare

City of Lost Souls  (The Mortal Instruments #5)
by Cassandra Clare

Description (Goodreads):
The New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments continues—and so do the thrills and danger for Jace, Clary, and Simon.

What price is too high to pay, even for love? When Jace and Clary meet again, Clary is horrified to discover that the demon Lilith’s magic has bound her beloved Jace together with her evil brother Sebastian, and that Jace has become a servant of evil. The Clave is out to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. As Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle wheedle and bargain with Seelies, demons, and the merciless Iron Sisters to try to save Jace, Clary plays a dangerous game of her own. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost?

Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

My Review:
Ok, this book just blew me away. In the last one, I wasn’t quite engaged, but wow, this one was just plain full of excitement and lots of drama and tension.

I particularly loved how the Sebastian and Jace camaraderie played out. There were times I was really doubting my instincts and, right along with Clary, wondering if things weren’t as bad as they seemed. Then there’s a bit of craziness with Magnus and Alec, but it’s more of a side story, kind of underplayed and yet disappointing. But as for relationships, I think my favorite one is Simon and Isabelle’s. They really grow a lot and in interesting ways.

Oh yeah, and the fight scenes are fantastic. Very exciting and dangerous. Clary gets plenty of opportunities to flex her new Shadowhunter skills in this book. The demons she and the others fight are scary, and unfortunately, I could picture them extremely well.

I listened to the audiobook version of this story, and as for the narration, I thought it was pretty spot on: good pacing, consistent voices for the characters, and all that. Just one narrator this time, one who’s read for the series before. I started these via audio, so I’m planning to follow through to the end the same way.

One thing that bugged me, however, was the continuing brother-sister tension thing. I thought we were through with that theme in previous books, but it rears up again, only worse. I kept thinking to myself, ‘it’s bad enough,’ and, ‘didn’t we already have this plot line?’ Still, it’s not quite the same, and it works for the story, so I guess that’s just what it is.

Another thing I noticed, which I thought was corny, actually, were all the little remarks like of course everybody loves Jace (or Clary or whomever). They’re perfect. There’s also some clunky writing here and there, particularly with some circular descriptions, where the same word keeps popping up to describe the same thing or even itself in close proximity. Just a bit sloppy, and I was surprised I picked it up, especially since I was listening to it and unable to flip back and check.

Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it to folks who enjoy paranormal YA fiction with lots of action, drama, and excitement. There’s plenty of angst, too, if you like that sort of thing. Still, I picked up on some things that might annoy folks, so take that with a grain of salt.

Good news is, if you want to play it safe, you could always do like me and borrow this from your local library.

Fantasy Review: We Are the Waking (The Lizard Queen #8) by H.L. Cherryholmes

We Are the Waking (The Lizard Queen #8)
by H.L. Cherryholmes

Description:
Though she’s unable to finish reading the final Extiguo to determine her role in bringing about the New Morphósis, Amy Darlidale quickly learns that Runakopolis puts her and her friends on the threshold of another major discovery.

A new mystery seems to hold clues to the origins of the Trotéjo and the Arañalianza. Beginning to sense that the ideologies at conflict have been preserved not only by clergy and government but also by culture, Amy is drawn into an enigmatic society of scholars.

At first, pages missing from library books and a new theory about the first Morphósis don’t seem to be connected to the Lacáruna prophecy, but the lines of military, church, and academia continue to intersect and familiar faces and adversaries reemerge. Rumors of war are spreading quickly, and whispers that La Arañota will soon rise again are amplifying. This world seems on the verge of shrinking much faster than anyone anticipated.

My Review:
This is book 8 of 9 in the Lizard Queen series, and it doesn’t disappoint. It unfolds like a mystery as Amy and her companions chase lead after lead. The Extiguos, the books they’d thought would reveal the prophecy, didn’t pan out and now they’re struggling to figure out what’s next.

I really liked how this book draws everything together from the previous books. All the little threads that were woven in but not explained previously are tightened up and start to take shape. Several of the characters are going through some tough times, trying to recover from traumatic experiences, which makes things interesting. Even Amy seems to be getting to the end of her tolerance. But still, it’s the new threads that kept me reading.

The new characters are as interesting as the established ones, particularly as good and bad get a bit fuzzy. I also enjoyed the revelations surrounding the Trotéjo and Arañalianza, as well as all the new theories some of the new characters bring to the table. It’s a very cerebral read in that respect, all full of lore and theory. Still, there’s some action and magic, and plenty of sleuthing, which keeps it moving in between the debates.

I did notice, however, that debates and dialog were quite heavy in this installment. I suppose it had to be as everyone’s trying to figure out together what’s going on and trying to understand what’s happened before, but I think it led to a lot less action than in some of the previous books.

Anyhow, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the last one. I’d recommend this to folks who enjoy fantasy with magic, parallel worlds, and lots of intrigue and mystery.

I received the review copy of this book from the author.
